what is vocational rehabilitation
and why do we include it?
Helping employees get back to work as soon as they are able is vital for the employee, employer and insurer.
That's why we include a vocational rehabilitation service alongside the core income protection insurance, available to all Sick Pay policyholders.
We work with the rehabilitation specialists at Proclaim Care to deliver this service.
With our help employees have a better chance of making a speedy and more successful return to the workplace, which ultimately is beneficial not only for the employee but the employer too.
The earlier, the better.
Our approach to handling employee absences is built on the established premise that the earlier the intervention, the better the outcomes. That’s why we will look to start helping an employee back into work early in their absence, rather than wait until the deferred period has expired.
What is vocational rehabilitation?
It's a programme of support, guidance, advice and treatment which has the sole aim of helping the employee back into the workplace following an illness or injury.
While the programme may include paid treatments such as physiotherapy for example, the real value is in the programme itself in providing the employee with a structured, achievable pathway back into work.
"At the centre of the service is the programme itself, providing structure, guidance and support with realistic and achievable goals."
It can help employees recover from all sorts of injuries, illnesses and conditions. The programme itself is unique to each individual employee, as each employee's circumstances will be different.
Is this mandatory or optional?
We must be given a chance to help everyone so the referral is mandatory. However, not all employees will benefit from rehabilitation, if for example, it is unlikely to improve outcomes for the employee, or we cannot improve on their existing treatment plan, then a rehabilitation programme will not be set up.
If rehabilitation is suitable, however, the employee must engage with the programme, otherwise it may affect any claim we pay.
Who manages the programme?
If a programme is suitable, each employee will have their own Rehabilitation Specialist who will draw up a return to work plan at the appropriate time. They will discuss and arrange treatments and guide the employee through the plan during their period of absence.
The Rehabilitation Specialist will be a qualified medical professional such as a nurse, physiotherapist or occupational therapist, appointed depending on the nature of the employee's condition.
How much does this cost?
For the employer and employee, nothing. The service is free. All support, guidance and where appropriate, treatment, is paid by us.
Does this pressurise an employee to return to work?
No, there would be no value in doing this. If the employee returns to work too soon it risks a further period of absence. The programme provides structure which helps employees to achieve their goal of making a successful and sustainable return to the workplace, with practical help, support and guidance.
Is this not what the GP or consultant does?
An employee's GP or Consultant retains primary control of their care. However, as we all know, sometimes the NHS cannot provide all the services an employee may need. We will work in partnership with the GP or Consultant and agree with them what additional help can be offered and when this should come into play. We are experts in helping an employee return to the workplace, whereas the GP or Consultant is concerned more generally with the employee's health.
What about data confidentiality?
At the outset, we'll ask you to obtain the employee's consent to share their personal data with Proclaim Care, our experts. All personal and sensitive information is kept completely confidential and will not be shared with anyone without the employee's consent.
Does vocational rehabilitation sound valuable?
when can it help?
the referral and rehabilitation process explained
Stage 1 - Tell us.
If an employee is absent from work, they are covered by the insurance and their absence is likely to last longer than 4 weeks, call us on 0203 003 6161 asap. (The earlier the better)
We'll conduct a pre-assessment over the phone and ask you a few questions:
- Employee's details and eligibility for cover
- Employee's job
- Reason for absence
- Length of absence and likely duration
If the employee is likely to benefit from the rehabilitation support we provide, we'll refer them for an initial assessment.
Stage 2 - Initial assessment.
This is conducted by the rehabilitation experts at Proclaim Care. They will speak to the employer and employee separately to understand the circumstances. As well as the condition and current treatment, they'll look at the job requirements to work out any other barriers which may hinder a successful return to work.
Based on their condition, they'll also discuss possible complementary treatments and therapies with the employee. They'll then write a short assessment report and send it to us.
Stage 3 - Programme agreed & implemented.
We'll discuss the report and its recommendations with Proclaim Care and agree the next steps, which may include funded treatments.
Proclaim Care will then speak to the employee, talk them through the plan and arrange appropriate treatments. They'll also discuss the plan with the employer, as their involvement throughout the process is crucial.
Stage 4 - Ongoing support.
For the duration of the return to work plan, the specialist will maintain regular contact with the employee and employer to check progress, provide ongoing support and guidance to include amending the plan where necessary. They'll also liaise with our claims team at the appropriate time.
